Hi

Iam new to quail keeping (I've kept chickens for about 3 years) I got quails 2 months ago, they have been happy until today
I got home from work to find the male (who lives happily with 6 hens) has been battered by one of the hens. I have taken him out of the pen and put him in the sick bay, he has a few small pecks on his face - near the eye - and basically looks shattered, has anyone got any ideas why this has happened and why? And any suggestions what I do now!! Will he be ab;e to go back in when he has recovered?

First off welcome to the site.

one of the questions I have is, how big of a cage did you house them in? Even though they might of been happy together over time they grow and the size of the pen gets to be too small for all of them to live in and start to attack and be on the defensive. I kept my quail ratio at 2 females to 1 Male.

Another question I have, what kind of quail are they?

They are jumbo coturnix quail and are in a 3ft adapted rabbit hutch with plenty of space according to another keeper I know.
Waht do you think?

I would increase the cage size, it seems a bit too small for that amount. calculate cage floor space at 1 square foot per quail. What will be your main purpose for your quail, breeding/selling or raise them just for fun?
