Post subject: Quail in Bolivia for ticks
PostPosted: Sat Nov 07, 2009 9:19 pm
I recently moved to Bolivia to work in sustainable agriculture and conservation. Ticks are horrible in our yard and carry diseases that are a real danger to our dog. I hate using dangerous chemicals on my yard. I've heard of using chickens to fight ticks around cattle, then I read about quail being even better at eating ticks. So much so that areas of the USA are releasing quail to bring down tick populations where Lyme disease is out of control. Quail are really popular here for their eggs so they should be easy to get. I like this idea since they are more interesting than chickens.

Since I am new to quail, I am looking for any suggestions. My yard is surrounded by a 10 foot high brick wall. could I let them roam free or will they fly out? Would I have to clip wings? I would like to just buy a pair or two, or would it be better to raise from hatchlings? Anyone keep dogs around quail? Any tips to training dogs not to kill them? I have raised all kinds of animals before, but quail are new. Any help would be great!
