I have build two pens so far each both 4' deep, 6' wide, and 2' high and the quail have been enjoying them. The height seems to work since they are all clipped and they often jump up to flap their wings yet never hit the roof. The first pens I build with 0.5" wire mesh at both the floor and the sides and tops. With the second pen I wanted to look more open and decided to use 1" regular chicken wire, and it seemed to work for a couple of months. As it is getting colder however, predators get more creative...The quail like to walk around their pens and stick their heads thru the holes in the chicken wire (and stretch their necks). In the last two weeks I found three birds beheaded in the pens next to the fence. Their heads are gone and I assume that an opossum or raccoon has grabbed their heads and ripped them off. I am now redoing the sides with 0.5" wire mesh too.
I just thought I'd share to prevent others from making the same mistake.
Mike.
